"Swire has built a clean and sustainable environment for our children to grow up in."

Kenneth and Sharon are newlyweds. They spent their honeymoon in Madrid, one of Cathay Pacific’s newest destinations. The excellent cabin quality, services on and offboard, as well as top notch safety standards gave the couple an unforgettable journey. What’s more is that Swire cares about our future generations. Through programmes to reduce carbon emissions, waste and noise, as well as investing in new technologies, Swire has built a clean and sustainable community for Kenneth and Sharon’s children to grow up in.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

CATHAY PACIFIC

Cathay Pacific has set up the “Fly Greener” programme to reduce emission of greenhouse gases.  The use of a modernised fleet and sustainable biofuels help improve the air quality.  Through the programme, customers can purchase “carbon offsets” to cover carbon emission of their flights.  All money paid for the offsets will provide funding to support sustainable projects, for example, a small hydro project in Changdao, a wind farm in Shandong and hydropower station in Lankou and Guangdong.  These environmental-friendly projects also reduce air pollution, enhance productivity of farms and offer jobs to locals.

In 2010, arrangements were made to increase the use of quieter Boeing 777-300ER aircraft instead of the Boeing 747-400s on more of the Hong Kong to London flights to alleviate noise impacts around London Heathrow airport during landing and take-off.

In terms of waste management efforts, Cathay Pacific constantly explores options to help reduce resource use and waste, or make better use of materials derived from more sustainable sources.  Through introducing Mobile Boarding Pass, electronic airway bill and paperless cockpit, it minimizes the amount of unnecessary wastage.  On top of that, the airline also utilizes recycled and sustainably sourced material in-flight such as food containers, and take initiatives to donate items like surplus food, first class sleep suits and computers.

HAECO

The HAECO team is committed to improving operational efficiency through innovation, investment in energy-efficient equipment, reduce waste to landfills and work closely with business partners.  For instance, HAECO Hong Kong has reinforced both its engineering and administrative controls using measures like installation of energy efficient lighting, thermometers in offices to monitor temperatures and enhanced energy saving awareness among staff.  In 2015, HAECO Group saved over 2,000MWh in electricity consumption.  This is achieved by installing solar panels in Xiamen’s premises, Hong Kong’s main office, mobile planning office and the windscreen working stands as energy saving measures.  In order to encourage further savings, HAECO team set a target for reducing the intensity of electricity consumption by 10% by the year of 2020, with 2015 as baseline.

Apart from utilising renewable and energy-efficient resources, for waste management, HAECO Group also strive to reduce water consumption through optimizing day-to-day operations including introduction of specialised machinery for cleaning processes such as aircraft washing.  HAECO Hong Kong has also installed water saving nozzles at water taps capable of saving up to 40% in water.  To reduce food waste, HAECO Hong Kong continues its cooperation with Hong Kong International Airport Authority to recycle food waste.

In return, HAECO Hong Kong received a Gold medal in the China Light and Power Green Plus Recognition Awards, a Bronze medal in the Hong Kong Awards of Environment Excellence and a Silver medal in the Bank of China EcoChallenger Awards in 2015 for the team continuous hard work in sustainable development.
